Dr Who

These props are all what I loosely term versions of the sonic screwdriver! They were mostly built for "Earthshock" and were used by Peter Davidson in particular where he is seen trying to defuse the Cyberbomb. However, they also, got used in Captain Zep: Space Detective, for which I built most of the props & models. Prop No 2 was also used in Blakes 7.

Martin Bower among some of the "Earthshock props prior to their delivery to the BBC.

The cyberbomb was also built from Perspex and aluminium glazing bar, with the functioning dispals mentioned earlier.

The Cyberlance from "Earthshock" started out life as a camera built for episode 1 of Blakes 7! (see photo23) It was built from perspex and aluminium double-glazing bar! and was very heavy.

The Cybercase from "Earthshock" contained 4 devices. It was just a converted camera case.

Above and below. The Cyberscope was again built for "Earthshock" (for some reason there were more props done for this story than almost any others) I had no say in its design and could not understand why something from an alien culture (The Cybermen) looked so much like the control console of the Tardis! It was made from plywood, EMA plastic tube and Perspex. The vanes around the top of the 3 probes are the sides from several railway turntable "Airfix" kits! The panels had fully functional digital displays. These played a random series of numbers. If you watch "Alien" you will see the same series of numbers appear. I cannibalised some of the panels from the Nostromo set and used these on both the Cyberscope and the Cyberbomb.

This spacecraft was bought "off the shelf" by the BBC. It was one of several ships that I built for my own enjoyment and which were subsequently used in the show. I don't know which story it was used in. Can anybody tell me? Opinion at the moment would seem to indicate it was never used. It was made from an upturned vac-formed power boat hull. The side engines were each made from 2 lower hulls of the "Airfix" MTB boat stuck back-to-back.

Who said "The camera never lies"? This model of the Tardis is actually only 8" high! It was used in the Peter Davidson episodes onwards. It was also used in the title sequence.

These Blasters were originally made for a story featuring the "Seadevils". They were made mainly from garden hose parts I obtained from a garden centre!

These are just a few of the many different ray gun/blasters I built for Dr Who over the years. Once again these incorporated garden hose and sprinkler parts. I don't know which story they were used in. Can anybody tell me please? (The rifles were used in the Tom Baker story Pirate Planet and the pistols were used in the Colin Baker story Vengeance on Varos, many thanks to all who mailed in.)

This is the camera built for Blakes 7 that became the Cyberlance.

This gun was built from a converted air pistol and was used by the famous actress Berryl Reid when she was cast as a spaceship commander in "Earthshock".

The finished Cyberlance.

I originally built these guns for a "pop" video. However, the BBC hired them on one occasion for use in Dr Who, but again I have no idea where they appeared. They were built of metal and perspex. The larger one was based on a replica "Schmeiser" machine gun!

The troopers guns from "Earthshock" came in 2 slightly different designs. Air rifle butts were used to save time in their construction. A car headlamp bulb was inside the perspex clear tube and lit up when the trigger was pulled. High tech huh!

I designed and built the original Cyberman's gun for "Earthshock" back in 1982. It evolved from some sketched I showed to Visual Effects and I ended up making 8 of these. They were mostly perspex. But the nozzle was a plastic chair caster protector and the fluted bit behind that was made from a car air freshener!

The budget for these props was very tight and they did not stand up well to filming, particularly as stunt men would fall over when shot and drop them on the floor; something they were not designed for! The BBC sold a licence to produce replicals of these guns to "Sevans" models, but the copyright in the design is actually mine, (like all the things I designed and built for the BBC) so the copyright was not actually theirs to sell!
