The scanner array was made from 3 layers of brass etch and was the finest piece to make being just a few thousands of an inch thick in places between the "spokes" This photo also shows the warp engine and nacelle covers made from "Perspex"

The engines and wings fitted to the secondary hull. Each "wing" carried 3 metal tubes through which ran the wiring to the neon's that "powered" the warp engines.

Photos 4-6 The wiring for the neon's became a real nightmare as each neon light needs its own "starter" and "choke" to make them work. Each choke weighed nearly 60 grams, so it was at this point I realised that all these devices would have to be outside the model, meaning ALL the wiring had to run down the steel support pole!

Just some of the starters needed to "fire up" the neon lights used in the model. Neon was used throughout as it gives off so little heat -essential in such a confined space.

The two halves of the model finally fitted together.

Testing the lighting in the saucer hull. As you can see, the lighting really only looks effective when the model is against a space background or in a slightly darkened room.

Photo 9-12 These photos show various stages of finishing of the model. Initially, I made all the decals, which included dozens of lifeboats! by scanning the decal sheet from the kit into the computer and printing it out on clear sticky film. However, I found that firstly the supposedly sticky sheet was not very sticky and the decals started to peel off almost immediately, and secondly, despite trying to matt them down, they were still too shiney! In the end I printed them out on ordinary thin paper, sprayed the back with "3M Spray Mount" and found these adhered to the model really well, and were not shinny! Mind you, this did mean I had to cut out each letter of the NCC 1701-E individually, but I think the end result was worth it.

The finished model!
