Space 1999

Martin made 86 models for Space 1999 whilst working on this immensely popular and groundbreaking TV serial.

The Psydon Ship Made from a cut down Eagle "beak" mould, 2 Triumph Herald tail light covers, a "Cadimatic" tea dispenser and a cream pot! In the episode 3 ships were seen. This was achieved by multiple exposures of the one model.

The first Battlecruiser

This is the front of the new "Battlecruiser" I built for "The Mark of Archanon" The main body is solid with Plastikard panelling. An alternative nose was built at the studios for a different episode.

This drawing of the first "Battlecruiser" was actually done after the initial model was built. I had built the model 5 years before the show but when it was bought from me to use in the series I had to re-design parts of it. To give Brian Johnson an idea of the changes I did this drawing before altering the model.

This is the centre section of second battlecruiser from "Mark of Archanon" It was mainly Perspex with extensive use of kit parts.

The 3 laser defence tanks built for "The Infernal Machine". Sadly all 3 only ever appeared in the one episode despite them all being fully motorised. To save me time the tracks were from "Tamiya" 1/24th scale tank kits. Otherwise they were totally scratch built in just over one week!

Working on the small "Gwent" model. It is only 14 inches across but was still motorised like its 5 ft wide larger version.

This is my original working drawing for the "Collision Course" shuttle. I stuck very closely to this when carving the final model.

These buildings from series 2 were made from 36" dia Perspex domes. I only found out when a van came to collect them from my studio that I'd made them too big to go through the door!

The 6 foot long "Ultra Probe" made maily from EMA plastic tube, pipe & sections. I used the "Tamiya" SchwererPanzerspahw agen (8rad)Sdkfz232! (Try saying that after a few pints!) for detailing. The chassis base from this same kit was used extensively on the Nostromo's nose section in ALIEN.

This was one of several derelict ships done for the "Dragon's Domain" graveyard of spacecraft. It was approx 30" long and was one of my favorites. However, I have never been able to spot it in the final cut seen on TV.

This large Eagle landing leg was fully operational. It was built for series 2 and used often attached to the camera to get a P.O.V (point of view) shot from the Eagle in flight.

Dave Hirsch of "STARLOG" magazine poses beside the 44" Eagle replica I built in 1987. Computers were not used to get this effect. Dave is a photo cut-out photographed separately and stood up next to the model. It gives a good idea of the size a person would be next to the Eagle.

The "Satazius" from "The Last Enemy" was built from hardboard and glass fibre. It was about 4 feet long and very heavy. The model was originally supposed to appear as 2 opposing craft, one in yellow and one in metallic green. These were originally seen attacking one another until someone pointed out that for those people with B/W TV sets (there were still a lot around in 1975!) it would appear as though the craft was attacking itself! To get over this, my first battlecruiser had to be re-configured (again!) and became the "other" ship!

These photos of the "Collision Course" Shuttle were taken by Brian Johnson for Tim Heald's book "THE MAKING OF SPACE 1999". The model was carved in Jelutong wood. It was over 5 feet long and had an opening nose that swallowed an Eagle. This meant I had to build an Eagle 51/2" long :the smallest Eagle used in the series. This is my sketch for the Taybor gun" I sometimes did quick sketches like this, sometimes full working drawings and sometimes just made ships up as I went along, often depending on the time I had for the job.

The Large scale nose section of the "Ultra Probe" was originally carved in wood. I then press moulded it in 60 thou plastikard to make it hollow and lighter. The cladding was done in 40 thou plastikard. The nose was intentionally supposed to resemble the Eagle for the same reasons explained regarding the "Hawk" All 4 clamp arms were operational as were the 4 round hatches (which can be seen open in this photo) on the front cone of the main ship. unfortunately these were never seen opening in the final cut. This model was built to the tightest of schedules. I only had 3 weeks to design and build all 3 Ultra Probe models need to obtain the necessary shots!

This ship is seen in the foreground of a shot of the "Ultra Probe" as it approaches the Space station In "Dragon's Domain" It was made from 2 plastic strip light covers with panelling from the "Airfix" Travelling Crane kit; a kit used extensively in Thunderbirds.

Here I am seen holding the 22" Eagle I built for series 2

The 11" "Hawk" before delivery to the studios.

The "Phoenix" from "Deaths Other Dominion" was built from a fibreglass shell I took from a mould I'd made several years earlier for my "Dragonfly" model.(see Gallery) This version was about 4 feet long and highly detailed with "Faller" girder kit parts. The base detail was made from upturned Scalextric track! Sadly, very little of the detail ever showed on TV.

This 44" Eagle was built for a fan in Canada in 1987. Unfortunately, I believe it has subsequently been sold on as an original model from the show which was not the case, although it is identical in every way to those

The 22" Hawk before orange was added.

Notice the escape pod on the bottom left: The Escape Pod was made from 2 press mouldings I originally built for the underside of the "Hawk"s nose. The tail bell jet was an egg cup! Fine detailing was from the Airfix SRN4 Hovercraft and Superfortress kits.

The Voyager Ship from "Voyagers Return" before delivery to the studio, and therefore minus the small chemical rockets that were later added. The model was built partly from a large plastic pic-nic set! With detailing from kits including the "Airfix" Lunar Module.

Taybor's Gun was one of my favorites but a bit of a swine to make. It was rather like constructing a 3D stained glass window in Perspex. Both the barrel and turret were operational.

The space station where the "dragon" lurked in the episode "Dragon's Domain". It was approx 4 feet long and made mostly from EMA tubing with kit detailing from Airfix SAM 2 missile kits and "BAKO" Bricks I'd had from when I was a kid.

This and next photo: The large and small Gliders from "Immunity Syndrome" was built of Perspex and P38 Isopon car filler. There was virtually no kit detailing on the model. Instead detail was achieved with heavy panel lines & weathering

The completed 22" and 11" "Hawk" models on the workbench.

This "Hawk" was one of 2 models I made for "War Games" It was supposed to resemble an Eagle in as much as, like other craft from Earth, Brian Johnson and I liked the idea that they all came from the same factory so would share similar design characteristics. Unfortunately, the director & editor of the episode felt it was too much like an Eagle so the nose, and some other sections, were picked out in orange after I delivered them to the studio.

The "Swift" was originally designed to appear in the one-off "Into Infinity" TV film made between the 2 series' of Space 1999, but was never used. However, the design by Ron Burton & Brian Johnson, was felt to be too good to waste so I got the job of building it to appear in the series 2 episode "Brian the Brain". It was mostly Perspex with a solid wood nose and turned aluminium engine bells.

The nose of the "Swift" which I carved in Jelutong wood.

Working drawings of the "Superswift" from "Bringers of Wonder". These were necessary to enable me to order the correct sizes of EMA tubing.

My early sketches of the "Superswift".

The "Superswift" was again in the style of other Earth-based ships. This model was a real heavy-duty job, with brass sprung legs, aluminium jets and a solid wood nosecone. The main body and tanks were EMA plastic.Kit detailing included parts from several 1/24th scale Harrier Jump Jets. The model was 6 feet long
