Supercar carved in jelutong wood with fibreglass, Perspex and plastic inlays to allow the wings to slide in and out.

The cockpit moulded in Perspex over a wooden mould, and the cockpit spars which were cut from ABS plastic and made to fit around the inside of the cockpit. For some reason only the front spar has little holes all around it

Various sections of Supercar ready for assembly. Fitting the cockpit to the model was one of the most difficult jobs.

Here I am modelling Mike Mercury's head in "Super Sculpy"; a material like "Plasticine" but which, like "Fimo" can be baked in the oven. A HUGE advantage

This photo shows the cabin boxed in and the wings in place. At this stage the model has a coat of primer filler mixed with sanding sealer over it.

This shows the rear fins which were carved in lime wood. As it's harder than jelutong I tend to use it for smaller pieces.

The model starts to come together. As can be seen in the last photo on the panel above many parts were painted before assembly.

The finished model. I made 2 canopies: one with the roof closed and one with it open.

Reg Hill and I discuss my Supercar. Reg was the true creator of Supercar, since he both designed it and built the large model (in balsa wood!) Sadly he died at the end of 2000.

Close up showing the radiator fins cut from ABS plastic (available from EMA Model Supplies) cut individually to fit the side curve of the model.

There are no kit bits on Supercar! Everything was made from scratch! The aerials were nails turned down in the lathe! Other parts were mostly turned in Perspex. The lights had to be sanded down with very fine Wet & Dry paper & polished up with "T-Cut".

hese show the interior of the cockpit. When I first made the model I was only able to put in certain detail as I had no reference material.....

I based my model on the puppet-sized Supercar, which was approx 6 feet long.

Photo showing the rear bulkhead and tail pipes reccessed in. This was done using Perspex plugs coated in release agent. The plugs were held in place & P38 filler put around them. When dry the plugs were removed & the filler sanded down till it formed an even wall thickness. The front intakes were done in the same way. The Perspex cockpit can be seen resting in place.

Supercar was painted silver first, and then various areas were masked up and painted. Here the red is being applied. If you try to spray any colour over red it will "bleed" through.

......however, when the videos were released I was able to screen-grab images and put in the rest of the equipment and other details. The seats are covered in real leather!

The 2 smaller models used, a 14 inch and 4 foot model were a different shape. I prefer the large model's shape.
